What is 3M™ PRESS-ON™ Prism?

3M™ PRESS-ON™ lenses are sheets or films designed to be placed inside the patient's glasses. The prisms have different diopters depending on the needs of the patient. For over forty years, 3M™ PRESS-ON™ lenses have been used in short-term vision correction therapy. For conditions ranging from strabismus to correcting the distances of your patient's favorite sports glasses or sunglasses, the 3M™ PRESS-ON™ lenses offer an easy and affordable solution to quickly correct vision problems. At around 1 millimeter thick, the lenses do not add weight to the glasses. The lenses are easy to apply.

3M™ PRESS-ON™ Prism, how does it work?

Under normal circumstances, in the presence of parallelism of the visual axes as well as normal binocular vision, the images seen by the two eyes are fused together in the visual cortex, creating an image that has three-dimensional properties. If there is a deviation, the image of the object is seen at different places on the retina of the respective eye and results in a diplopia or double vision. A prism is a “special” triangular lens (it has two sides that create an angle) that is able to direct or deflect the image of objects towards its vertex. This allows it to “fall” precisely on the retinas of each eye. In this way, the brain perceives only one image and the patient does not look twice.

When should 3M™ PRESS-ON™ be used?

Since diplopia, also known as double vision, can indicate a primary pathology, it is essential to undergo a thorough examination by an expert in order to determine the origin of the double vision. Once the reason has been identified, if the condition remains stable (more than six months), it is possible to identify the need for a prismatic correction. Prisms can be used to treat minor deviations that are stable and cause double vision at the initial focus (looking straight ahead). Likewise, prisms may be useful for some patients with the condition known as nystagmus (involuntary tremor of the eyes) with mild torticollis to stop the tremor, as well as in some cases of phoria (latent strobe) which can cause symptoms of asthenopia (headache due to eyestrain, blurred vision).

What are the results of a 3M™ PRESS-ON™?

It is essential to remember that the purpose of the prism is not to rectify the deviation, but to deflect the image in order toavoid double vision. It cannot therefore correct the fundamental problem or the cosmetic aspect of strabismus.
